Storing and Caring for Milk Kefir Grains

Milk Kefir Grains can be made into many kinds of things. You can mix these kefir grains with fresh milk to make a smoothie or yogurt-like beverage or you can make it into a thick tangy cheese. Most of the time, milk kefir is very similar to yogurt; aside from the fact that it is a little thinner compared to the latter. Just like yogurt, Kefir milk can also come in many different flavors. When it is not in use, you must know the proper way of storing them. Because these grains contain live bacteria and yeast that exist in harmony, you can't just store them anywhere.

Kefir grains can last for quite a long time provided that you know how to properly store and take care of them. The grains are also capable of multiplying without any difficulty so you wouldn’t have to worry about purchasing another batch of kefir culture if you are in need of kefir milk in the future. All you will need to do is learn how to care and store these kefir grains. It is highly advisable to store your kefir grains in a carton of fresh milk. When storing them in a carton of fresh milk, be sure to change the milk at least once every week. By doing this, you will keep the culture active and healthy as you store them.

After storing your kefir grains for quite some time, you might have to reactivate them before you can use them to make milk kefir again. It is highly recommended that you avoid deep freezing the culture when storing them. This will make the reactivation much slower than it should. Additionally, deep freezing can damage your kefir grains in such a way that you might end up needing to replacing them. With proper care, you won't ever need to replace your kefir grains.
